In some instances a gas fitter may permit the running of pipework during construction by a DIY builder, but as the person responsible for certification, the gas fitter will need to have full access to all pipework and all junctions to ensure it complies. It is recommended to have your gas fitter examine your plans, prior to construction to ensure any new standards are met. This is NOT a guide to allow you to be a gas fitter, it allows you to design your caravan or motorhome to adhere to AS Exceptions are generally excluded from this brief guide.

This means that you may be able to be exempt from some of the rules by complying in other ways. If you are unable to make your design work by following this brief guide, you may need to buy the full AS There is also a companion guide for those replacing regulators or pigtails.

The Which Antifreeze and how often to change How often do you need to change the Antifreeze solution? Well, it depends on the solution that is in there now. Most UK manufactured caravans, certainly my Bailey van, are filled with two year Antifreeze. This means that the solution should be changed when the van is two years old. The reason for changing at this time is that although the anti freezing part is still working, the corrosion inhibiters included in it are reaching the end of their effectiveness.

Alde recommend using a 5 year life solution and you should ensure this is what is used when you get the fluid changed. There is a lot of talk about the need to fully flush the system on changing the fluid and of the non compatibility of Antifreeze solutions. Correspondence with Alde can be read below, but, the main thing that comes out of it is that Comma Xstream G40 is the one to use as it is fully backwards compatible and considerably cheaper than Alde’s own branded one.

I have found that Amazon is the cheapest source for it HERE So, yes it should be flushed on changing but some of the old fluid being left will not react with the new Antifreeze solution. Alde Customer Services Thank you for your enquiry.

Employment Opportunities As you know each time you turn on a faucet, flush a toilet, or do a load of laundry, the water and waste travels out of the house and into the Septic Tank. Some of the waste sinks to the bottom and some of it floats. As more water goes into the Septic Tank, an equal amount gets pushed out to the Drainfield. From the first Septic Tanks until there was no real baffle installed in the tank to hold back the sludge from getting close to the outlet end of the tank.

Running Water Systems In Campervans Pretty near the top of most people’s wish lists in a basic campervan conversion would be a sink with a tap and running water. It’s pretty easy to install a cold water system, so why not! Water systems and general plumbing in Campervans tend to work slightly differently to water systems in the home. For a start, water needs to be pumped to compensate for the lack of mains pressure, and you need to install tanks to hold your freshwater supply and wastewater.

One of the most DIY conversion friendly approaches is detailed here – in principle, all you need is a freshwater tank, with a ‘drop in the tank’ submersible campervan water pump taking the water to where it is needed. Planning Your Campervan Water System As with everything in your Campervan Conversion project, a bit of planning and forethought is required to get a user friendly Campervan Water System that doesn’t cost the earth.

The sink and tap are the main items on show, and it is worth putting some thought into where you want this to go in your van. There are many space saving solutions available, with combined sink and stove units or sinks with lids that fold down to leave a work surface. For small campervans e. You will also want to remove the tank occassionally to give it a good clean, so try to make it relatively easy to remove – a plywood panel screwed over your tank so that once a year or so you just have to unscrew a few screws to take the tank out completely is a good way to do it – this also makes replacement an easy proposition.

Equally important is a wastewater tank – preferably a good size so you don’t have to empty it every few washes, again sited near and below the sink so gravity can do a good job of emptying your sink. Importantly you will also need access to a power supply for the water pump. When you turn a tap on the switch inside it is activated and the water pump runs. Turn the tap off and the switch is turned off again stopping the pump.

In entry level RVs though, the water heater may only operate in LP gas mode. Water heaters in other motorhomes might operate by a third heating method called Motoraid see more below , which uses waste heat from the motorhome engine to heat the water as you drive. Finally, some high end RVs may have an entirely different system in which the water heater is part of a diesel and electric central heating system, typically either the Aquahot or Hydrohot brand names.

These systems are an entirely different animal and will not be discussed here. A few models are advertised as being 16 gallon heaters, but these are actually 10 gallon heaters that superheat the water and then mix cold water at the outlet, making them roughly equivalent to having a 16 gallon heater at the usual degrees. The RV water heater can be operated in either mode or both can be used to speed up the heating process.

RV Water Heater Basics, Types, and Maintenance. By Gary Brinck Mods, tank, hot water runs until the pump turns on, then the water is cold. The only thing that could cause this is the cold water intake pipe,, which usually runs to the bottom of the tank so the hot water stays on the top of the tank and is used first. If you have hooked.

Having considered the options see below we decided to install a ‘4-hole’ litre refillable LPG gas tank under the van floor. This saves using valuable space inside the van for a gas bottle locker. A refillable tank can be topped up at any time, it does not have to be empty.

Blowing out water pipes by Phillip I am planning to buy a compressor to blow out water pipes for winter. What size compressor would I need? Yes, it’s getting to be the time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere where we have to be concerned about water freezing in pipes that are exposed to the frigid wintertime conditions. What you need to blow out a fairly small water pipe as you’ve outlined above is a small compressor.

Let me ask you, are you just going to use the compressor for this? If so, then perhaps you might rent an air pig or small air tank, fill it up with compressed air at the local gas station, and use that to blow the lines instead of buying an air compressor. On the other hand, once you’ve got an air compressor, you’ll find lots of uses for it. In order for the water line to be voided of water, you need to fill it with compressed air fairly quickly.

The compressed air, flowing into the water pipe, will drive the water before it and out the other end.

Water Water – but not everywhere At home we don’t need to think much about utilities like water – it’s all there quite literally ‘on tap’. The simplest answer of course is to use a container to collect water from a nearby tap as caravanners do. In practice this means having another container as well to take the waste water but these are not very convenient in a motorcaravan where you are frequently on the move – even if just for days out.

In practice then almost all modern motorhomes of any size will have both fresh tanks as permanent fixtures and many will have waste tanks too. The tanks are kept dark either in a cupboard or by being made from black polythene to help prevent algae growth. The filler is usually outside with a locking cap – and a clear symbol for water, to discourage anyone from filling up the water tank with fuel – but this is not unknown – nb!!

It may seem complicated to the newcomer, but a few minutes spent understanding the basic principles, common terms and definitions in use will be worthwhile in ensuring your enjoyment of our product. Measurement Of Nose Weight, Towing Vehicle’s Rear Suspension Another simple method is to use bathroom scales and a suitable piece of strong timber as a platform to rest the tow hitch on. The timber can be placed vertically between the caravan tow hitch and the bathroom scales.

The timber should be of such length that when the caravan tow hitch is lowered onto it, using the jockey wheel, the caravan floor is horizontal. Recommended Tow Ball Height There are a number of suspension aids available and advice should be sought on which to use and how to fit. It is important to ensure that the caravan is towed either level or slightly nose down.

Are you sure you want to delete this answer? Yes Sorry, something has gone wrong. A lb tank is not going to run a pool heater properly. It does not have enough mass to produce adequate vapour to feed a large burner like a pool heater. A propane tank is not just a storage device. It is also a vaporizor. It has to absorb heat out of the air around it to make the liquid propane inside boil and produce vapor.

A pool heater is like running 3 or 4 furnaces in an average house depending on the size of your pool. A lb cylinder will run for a couple of hours at the most and then “freeze up”. It wont be producing enough vapor for the heater to operate properly. If you are going to use lb cylinders, you will need to manifold at least two, probably three of them together to obtain enough of what we call “wetted surface area” to feed a pool heater.

Even then, they will freeze up before you ever run them completely out. You really need to contact a propane company and have a gallon tank installed. To answer yor question as asked

Install Fresh and Grey Water Systems Most van conversions will want to have some kind of system to provide fresh water for washing dishes, cooking, showers, And, some kind of system to safely and legally handle the water (grey water) that drains from sinks and basins.

There are basically two ways to get the water into your RV… by connecting a hose to the city water inlet, or by filling your fresh water holding tank. Use a hose that is safe to use for drinking water. If you connect to the city water inlet, always use a pressure regulator. If you fill the fresh water holding tank, make sure the drain valve if there is one is closed. If the tank has a vent tube or valve, the tank will fill faster if the vent is opened.

If the water chugs, glugs or spits back at you when filling the tank, either the tank does not have a vent, the vent is plugged or the vent is shut off. Turn the water faucet down a bit and let the tank fill at its own slow pace. Just turn on the faucets. At first, the water may sputter a bit due to air inside the lines, so let the water run until all the air has been purged from the lines. Holding tank If you are not hooked up to a fresh water supply, then you will need to use the water from your fresh water holding tank.
