The Princeton Reverb is characterized by the mid—range tummy tuck that some Fender amps are known for. It has those slightly reduced mids and fattens up with some low—end breakup when the player cranks the master volume. That breakup lets some extra low—mids ring. One, of course, is the reverb unit. The other is an additional gain stage that follows the reverb — utilizing a 12AX7— that pushes the amp to heavier saturation when played at breakup volume.

The Princeton without reverb never quite enjoyed the mass appeal, go—to status as the Princeton Reverb. Even so, Mike Campbell has made heavy use of the Princeton in the studio and on tour with The Heartbreakers. Jason Isbell has been known to plug a custom Tele directly into a Princeton when touring with his wife, Amanda Shires. But the Princeton Reverb is the stuff of legend.

I’ve found that all vintage Fenders take pedals well, so distortion isn’t a problem, the question is how much volume do you need for the basic clean tone and do you need reverb or tremelo or both?

Amps that would work with a loud drummer: The Super is probably loudest with s, and has a great cutting tone that works for blues and rock, might not be the best for punk? The Pro is also pretty loud, although the 12″ speakers sound better distorted to me. They’re both heavy pigs. The Bandmaster has a smaller OT, and sounds great clean but a bit polite distorted.

The Pro and the Bandmaster both have the smaller output transformer and slightly less power. The Super Reverb, Concert, and Tweed 4×10 Bassman all have a beefier OT that drives a 2 ohm load and pput out a bit more power than the other 2. The piggyback style Bassman has the beefier trannie designed for a 4 ohm load.

For what it’s worth, you can get a reproduction “Blackface” face plate which will woo your clients. I’m not really into that sort of thing but my 68 had one on there when I bought it and I haven’t bothered to put the original silver one back on since it is, for all intents and purposes a blackface. Of all the tubes I’ve auditioned in those amps, RCA’s and Tung Sol’s vintage, not re-issue are easily the best sounding in the preamp and power positions.

Band-Master Chassis robrob Normal Channel Reverb Mod This is my recommended mod to add reverb and tremolo to the Normal channel in blackface and silverface amps. Using this method we join the two channels using their own coupling caps and mixing resistors in a relatively noninvasive way.

With each channel using a coupling cap and mixing resistor to feed the reverb circuit and V4B preamp, both channels’ output are perfectly balanced with minimum attenuation and channel interaction. By preserving the Normal channel coupling cap we can use it to voice the channel such as in the Lead Channel Mod. The robrob Reverb Mod does not affect the Vibrato Channel’s tone at all.
